The Map of the Sky by Felix J. Palma

Title: the Map of the Sky
Author: Felix J. Palma
Publication Date: September, 2012
Publisher: Atria Books
Series: Book 2 in a Trilogy
Source: Publisher
Available Formats: Hardcover, eBook, Audio
Available for PreOrder: Paperback

When I read The Map of Time last year, I didn't realize that it was to be the first book in a trilogy. When I was offered The Map of the Sky for review I was really curious to see how Palma would continue the story of H.G. Wells. I was definitely not expecting other characters from the first book to show up but they did and Palma connects the two stories wonderfully.

The Map of the Sky is another novel in three parts told by the same unnamed narrator who told The Map of Time. H.G Wells novels are at the center of both stories - The Time Machine and The War of the Worlds respectfully and he is the central character. The Map of the Sky combines fantasy, adventure, and romance to create a literary tale that captures the reader. Palma brings to life the stories of H.G. Wells in a new way as the author must participate in the adventures of his imagination. What if the Earth was truly invaded by Martians? Could H.G. Wells and his companions survive the attack or even prevent it from happening?

Palma loads his novel with details. Some seem meaningless at the time they are presented but they are wrapped together eventually in an epic way. Stories that feel disconnected converge and characters who seem to be on distant paths find their purposes overlap. The beginning and the end, which seem so far apart initially, circle around on each other and create a complex system in space and time.

Although The Map of the Sky is lengthy, I found there to be much less overlapping of the story than there was in The Map of Time. For me, this was a big improvement because it kept the story moving forward rather than replaying various scenes from another perspective. To be honest, it took me much too much time to read this book but only because personal circumstances over the last few months have reduced my reading time considerably. Whenever I got a chance to pick up The Map of the Sky I didn't want to put it back down again.

Now that I know this is a trilogy, I am greatly looking forward to the third volume.

Excerpt:

The smell of the beast became like aged bourbon. It was rotten and harsh. It tasted like burnt wood, with a swirl of sugar through it. The beast squirmed beneath me as his life was being exhausted. My own claws held firm.

I could feel the evil in him subsiding as I drank from him. I felt as though I were on fire with passion. The warm liquid had been intoxicating to my soul. I did not want it to end, but I could feel it was. I felt the beast fall limp beneath me. I still could not stop, until every scene in the epic saga of his existence was extinguished.

I looked up with a quick jerk to find Drake. It was only then that I realized he hadn’t appeared to have moved. He wore a wry smile on his face.

It took only a second for me to hone in on what he was seeing. He was seeing me, but I was different. As I saw myself through his eyes, I took a long look. My physique was much the same. I was tall and muscular, but lean. My face was skewed, and somewhat distorted. My facial bones were not in place, where they should have been. My jaws were wide and lengthened. The teeth were enlarged, and the fangs that hung out looked long and sharp. My bottom teeth matched the top. It had fangs as well, that protruded upwards to fit together with the top ones. They resembled the blades of small scissors, and fit together sharply. I ran my tongue across them to be sure I was seeing correctly. My eyes appeared to have a wild abandon in them. They were no longer the bright blue that I remembered, but a deep purple, with black running through them.

I saw panic in them as I felt it surge through me. I quickly stood and turned, burying my face in my hands. As I did, I saw the claws. My hands were not even my own now. The nails were long and sharp. They were like daggers on the ends of my fingertips. They still wore the fur and blood from the beast I had just destroyed; from the beast I had just consumed. I held my hands over my eyes, wanting to block out the horrific vision of myself. I could not block it out. It was embedded there in Drake’s, vision which I could see as clearly as my own.

I felt Drakes hand on my shoulder before I realized he had moved. How could he have come to me? I was such a monster. He did not fear me though. I knew that. He was there to comfort me. He did not see me as sinister, which was how I saw myself. I found it strange that he saw the beauty in me. The blood that covered my chin and neck held an appeal to him as well.

He turned me to him, being careful to avoid the long marks across my back that I could feel still gaping open. I wanted to bury my face in his chest. I wanted to have him hold me until this was all gone. He did not. Instead he pulled me to him and began to carefully lick the blood from my chin, and down onto my neck. I felt his teeth gently graze across me as he licked. My eyes were closed tight, as were his, which gave me some relief of seeing what he would have envisioned.

When his tongue had cleaned the crimson fluid from my face I cautiously began to open my eyes. I wasn’t sure I wanted to see, but I knew I needed to. Drake was much like I had been. His teeth were enlarged, his fangs protruded down. The bottom ones met the top, just as mine had. His eyes had changed and were the deepest black, with green flecks running through them. I could feel the sharpness of his fingernails on my back as he held me. I could not wrap my mind around it, but I found him beautiful.

About the Author:

Georgia L. Jones was born in Columbia, Missouri on September 21st, 1968. In 1992 she settled in the beautiful Ozarks town of Lebanon, Missouri, where she met and married the love of her life. Together they have raised 7 children and have the 8th still in their home.

At a young age Georgia learned the value of getting lost in a good book. She has always enjoyed reading and letting her imagination run wild. In her early teenage years she began to put her own stories down on paper as she plunked out the words on an old manual typewriter.

In 1996 Georgia enrolled at Missouri State University where she majored in Psychology. While there she found an untamable thirst for Philosophy and Greek Mythology. Many evenings she can still be found curled up with one of the great Greek Tragedy’s or reading about personal continuity by Rene Descarte.

Over the years Georgia has harbored the dream of being a published author and written many short stories. On January 10, 2010 she embarked on the dream as she began to bring the characters from her first novel, “Legends of Darkness”, to life. Upon completion in June 2010 she realized that it was not a single book but a series and created the concept of the series “Remnants of Life”. She is currently working diligently on the “Remnants of Life” series.

OTL: Green Mountain Coffee

Are you a coffee drinker? I didn't used to be. For the longest time I loved the smell of coffee and even coffee treats like coffee ice cream but I didn't drink coffee. Then a friend introduced me to Starbucks White Mocha and I was hooked. Unfortunately, that is a pretty expensive habit to get in to! I didn't have a coffee pot at home but decided to get a small one when we moved close enough for my parents to start visiting more often. At first, my mom brought her own coffee but I got some when I started drinking a little bit of coffee in the mornings when she was here. Now it has progressed to where I have coffee at home almost every morning. I still can't drink it black though - I really like flavored creamers!

I like it when I can support socially responsible companies with my purchases and coffee seems to be one area where it really does make a difference. Green Mountain Coffee offers a variety of Fair Trade Certified coffees. So what does Fair Trade Certified mean? It means farmers get a fair price for the coffee beans, better working conditions, and protection for the environment. It is really easy to see which Green Mountain coffees are Fair Trade Certified on their website because you can use that as one of the factors when sorting their coffees. Green Mountain Coffee also offers their Fair Trade Certified Coffees in multiple forms - ground, whole bean, and K-Cups.

I received three packets of ground Green Mountain House blend coffee from BzzAgent to try plus several coupons to share. Since I always add flavored creamers to my coffee I am no judge of actual coffee taste so I shared this with my mom on her last visit. She really enjoyed the coffee and said she liked it much better than a different brand that she recently bought for her house. She also shared that Green Mountain Coffee is the official coffee of Heifer International because of its Fair Trade Certification.

To find out more about Fair Trade Certified coffees check out the Green Mountain Coffee Facebook page. There are music videos from Grace Potter and Michael Franti plus behind the scenes videos as they take tours of farming communities in Colombia and Sumatra. You can also connect with Green Mountain Coffee on Twitter.

Artists & Thieves by Linda Schroeder Guest Post

Today I'm pleased to welcome Linda Schroeder, author of Artists & Thieves, as she stops by on her virtual tour with Pump Up Your Book. Linda has a great post for you today on keeping descriptions simple to not slow down the action.

About the Book:

Winner of the 2011 San Diego Book Awards, Action/Suspense category

Where there is art, there are thieves.

Mai Ling is both. Artist by day, thief by night, she recovers stolen art for Interpol. It’s a business, not a passion, until her beloved grandfather reveals a family secret that is also a destiny. He is duty-bound to return to China an especially precious bowl which belonged to his ancestor. Mai must steal it for him.

But Mai Ling is not the only one after the bowl. Four others plan to extract the bowl from a private California art collection. The rival thieves grasp and then lose the bowl until finally Mai is faced with the ultimate dilemma: save the bowl or save herself. Her duty to her grandfather gives her only one choice.

Set against the vibrant backdrop of the Monterey Peninsula and peopled with quirky characters, this stylish art caper entertains on every page.

MAKE IT CLEAR

I sometimes write wonderful metaphors to describe settings but when I re-write I toss the flowery prose into the “outtakes” file because it slows the scene down.

Recently I had an experience in my Chinese brush painting class that reinforced my belief that descriptions in novels are best when simplest. The assignment was fruits and vegetables. I don’t relate well to apples or bok choy. I don’t find Western still-life paintings very thrilling, either, although I do marvel at the skill of artists who can show the vitality in plums.

In class I found a picture of grapes in one of my teacher’s books. I liked it because it also had two funky roosters in it. It was done in shades of black ink and the only color was red for the roosters’ combs and wattles. It was very hard at first glance to tell that the shades of gray were roosters and that they were sitting on some kind of fence which presumably supported the grape vines. Three of my fellow students stopped by my table and looked at both my attempted copy and the picture I was copying. Three of them said, “What is that?” I said, “It’s two roosters on a grape vine.” Three of them said, “I don’t see it.”

Point taken.

If we have to work too hard to see something, no matter how masterly the product, we stop looking. Stopping is not good. We don’t want to lose readers because they can’t figure something out, especially in an action/suspense novel.

After I had written the first draft of Artists & Thieves and knew where the plot was headed, I had to go back and add descriptive details to plant certain images for the reader. Throughout the book, important things happen by the ocean and one particular detail that is critical in the final climatic scene is the red tide. A red tide is a build up of a certain kind of algae in the ocean. When the waves break, micro-organisms in the water give off bursts of light. It’s called bioluminescence. At night, the waves look like neon. I had gathered a lot of information on red tides and in writing the climatic scene threw a lot at the reader. Didn’t work. It was the climax. It had to move fast. So in rewriting, I simplified it and also included the red tide early in the book in the first description of the heroine’s home:

“Mai paid the cab driver and climbed the steep sidewalk to her home in Sutro Heights. The gulls glided above the Pacific in the warm air of early afternoon. Last night they had sailed on the wind over a sea alive with sparkling, luminescent organisms in a rare light show, a red tide. On her nightly run, along with hundreds of others, Mai had marveled at the shimmering sight. But she only glanced quickly at the sea now.”

So right away you know that Mai lives on a hill by the sea and there is a red tide making the ocean glow. Hold those thoughts.

In writing descriptions we need to show details which paint a picture and move the story forward, not weigh it down. Some writers pile on great descriptions. Some are skimpy. Either way, description has to let the reader visualize a place without stopping to wonder what the author means by it all. Artists & Thieves won the 2011 San Diego Book Awards in the action/suspense category. It does zip along.

About the Author:

Linda Schroeder divides her time between the bright sun of California and the high mountains of Colorado. She has a Master’s degree in English and one in Communicative Disorders/Audiology. In addition to her novel, Artists & Thieves, she has published a college text.

Her early interest in English expanded to include language disorders and she began a second career as an audiologist and aural rehabilitation therapist working with deaf and hard-of-hearing children and adults.

Currently, she studies and practices Chinese brush painting, celebrating the vitality and energy of nature. She follows art and art theft blogs and writes her own blog about art and sometimes includes reviews of novels. She is working on two more novels, a second Mai Ling novel about the Diamond Sutra, and a Sammy Chan art mystery about the forgery of a Goya painting.

Dementional by Tonya Cannariato - Excerpt

Title: Dementional
Author: Tonya Cannariato
Publication Date: August 2012
Publisher: Katarr Kanticles Press
Available Formats: eBook, Paperback
Blog Tour: First Rule Publicity

Description: Mark Inman has two loves: particle physics and Sarah. She agrees to become his wife at the same time his experiment to find the Higgs boson goes off the rails.

Journey with Mark while his existence melts and reforms in unpredictable ways as the veils between realities thin. His exploration of the minutiae of quantum physics builds a fascinating tapestry of alternate universes.

His search for survival, and the search for meaning and what is real, drive Mark as he experiences lives he never dreamed possible. His only touchstones: find Sarah and find his way home.

Excerpt:

“I love you.” I groan as the tingles advance up my toes and feet, and the characteristic sparkles edge my vision.

I’ll never know whether Sarah heard me this time. Or any other time I’ve told her, for that matter.

My problem is that the dimensional shift can come without me stirring; I’m in the middle of a conversation, and the other person doesn’t know I’ve begun moving in the mysterious sub-atomic spaces.

This time my shift is lucky: the Sarah looking back at me from behind doe-brown eyes looks similar to the one to whom I had just confessed my emotions. Same short brown hair with auburn highlights, same angular cheekbones, though the hollows beneath them are a little more pronounced. This version hasn’t been eating well, I can see from the paper-thin texture of her previously fine skin. I’m even still holding her by her shoulders, though her coat is threadbare now.

I know Sarah is suspicious, as I try to regain my footing in the conversation. In every incarnation I’ve known her, she is quick to catch details out of sync. She is dearer to me every time she notices that I’m not quite the same person she’s known. It’s my first mission every time I notice the leaves have changed shape, or the road is made of a different material, or even that the skin on my hand has molted to some new form: Find the Sarah of this reality. I consider myself something like her guardian angel, though that sounds more maudlin than I intend. She is a sort of gravity well for me, and though we’ve been together in dimensions that can’t be explained in human terms, and I couldn’t describe the equivalent of what color her eyes were or whether she had hair, her soul chimes at a specific frequency that brings out the best in my own. And lets me know her regardless of the form in which it’s cloaked.

About the Author:

A voracious reader since she was a toddler, and an ordained spiritualist, Tonya Cannariato has now presided over the marriage of her love of reading and her love of writing. She’s lived a nomadic life, following first her parents in their Foreign Service career through Africa, Europe, and Asia, and then her own nose criss-crossing America as she’s gotten old enough to make those choices for herself. She’s currently based in Milwaukee with her three loves: her husband and two Siberian Huskies. She suspects her Huskies of mystical alchemy with their joyous liberation of her muse and other magical beings for her inspiration. She loves to sleep, to watch her interesting dreams, some of which are now finding new life in written form.

UMBRAL

 I don’t know who I was before.

It doesn’t matter.

I can’t live in the past. The past is dead. I know my future. I know my purpose. I’m told I chose it, this path, this shadow. Who knows. Do any of us really choose what we become? Does the stone choose to become the blade? The chips fall away from either side of the flint, and the edge is revealed by the stone-knapper. The edge was always there, waiting to draw blood. You can’t blame the stone-knapper for setting it free.

As a stone dies to be reborn as a blade, so a man dies to be reborn as Deathsworn. So I died to be reborn as Umbral: an edge sharpened to cut a single throat.

I have killed many. Men. Women. Children. Some in battle. Some in their sleep. Some I looked in the eye as I drained their lives. I felt their arms rub against mine, their palms press my palms, as if we were friends. I shadowed their auras as an eclipse blocks the sun, leeched their light and stole their power. Their faces accuse me in the grey mist just before dawn, before I chip free of them, each and every day. Those faces do not matter to any but themselves and me, and not even to themselves any longer. If I had not killed them, another Deathsworn would have.

There is one, however, that only I can kill. The girl with six colors.

DINDI

She was helpless. With a single touch, the man in black had reduced her to quivering flesh, yearning for more of whatever he had done to her. Even after he released her, the aftershock left her whole body tingling.

Dindi recognized the Deathsworn menhirs, but he had no right to bring her here. She was not wounded, condemned or sick. By the law of light and shadow, his kind had no claim to her. But he had stalked her, deceived her and captured her. If he knew the law of light and shadow, he obviously did not give a damn.

She still did not know why he wanted her.

His strange, dark beast crouched overhead, hiding them from the rain under huge leathery wings. The man in black lit a circle of flame around them with a single gesture.

His face. His lie of a face. Why did he have to have that face?

About the Author:

Tara Maya has lived in Africa, Europe and Asia. She’s pounded sorghum with mortar and pestle in a little clay village where the jungle meets the desert, meditated in a Buddhist monastery in the Himalayas and sailed the Volga River to a secret city that was once the heart of the Soviet space program. This first-hand experience, as well as research into the strange and piquant histories of lost civilizations, inspires her writing. Her terrible housekeeping, however, is entirely the fault of pixies.
