OTL: Green Mountain Coffee

Are you a coffee drinker? I didn't used to be. For the longest time I loved the smell of coffee and even coffee treats like coffee ice cream but I didn't drink coffee. Then a friend introduced me to Starbucks White Mocha and I was hooked. Unfortunately, that is a pretty expensive habit to get in to! I didn't have a coffee pot at home but decided to get a small one when we moved close enough for my parents to start visiting more often. At first, my mom brought her own coffee but I got some when I started drinking a little bit of coffee in the mornings when she was here. Now it has progressed to where I have coffee at home almost every morning. I still can't drink it black though - I really like flavored creamers!

I like it when I can support socially responsible companies with my purchases and coffee seems to be one area where it really does make a difference. Green Mountain Coffee offers a variety of Fair Trade Certified coffees. So what does Fair Trade Certified mean? It means farmers get a fair price for the coffee beans, better working conditions, and protection for the environment. It is really easy to see which Green Mountain coffees are Fair Trade Certified on their website because you can use that as one of the factors when sorting their coffees. Green Mountain Coffee also offers their Fair Trade Certified Coffees in multiple forms - ground, whole bean, and K-Cups.

I received three packets of ground Green Mountain House blend coffee from BzzAgent to try plus several coupons to share. Since I always add flavored creamers to my coffee I am no judge of actual coffee taste so I shared this with my mom on her last visit. She really enjoyed the coffee and said she liked it much better than a different brand that she recently bought for her house. She also shared that Green Mountain Coffee is the official coffee of Heifer International because of its Fair Trade Certification.

OTL: Smartfood Selects

BzzAgent and Smartfood Selects sent me three bags of snacks to try. I received a full sized bag of Sour Cream Onion Puffed Corn and snack sized bags of Garlic Tomato Basil Hummus Popped Chips and Cinnamon Brown Sugar Multigrain Popped Chips. Smartfood is best known for its awesome tasting White Cheddar Cheese Poppcorn which is completely addictive and easy to eat an entire bag in one sitting. Now they are offering a larger variety of snacks with their Selects line. This line of popcorn, popped chips, and puffed corn highlights the flavor combinations of herbs and spices. Just as important as what has gone in to these snacks though is what has been left out. There are no artificial colors, flavors, or preservatives, 0 grams of trans fats, and no MSG. The snacks are Kosher and the bags are resealable.

Now that I've given you the facts, how do the snacks taste? Well, unfortunately, this review will be slightly biased simply based on the flavors I received. While I know it is unrealistic to expect a company to be able to send everyone their first choice in snack flavors, I do with there had been some way to indicate a preference when signing up for this event. I am not a fan of Sour Cream Onion flavored anything so I would not have chosen this product to try. My husband did try the Puffed Corn but he was not a fan. I think this was in part due to come confusion on what to expect. I'm pretty sure he thought he was getting a pop corn snack and the puffed corn texture was not at all to his liking. He said the flavor itself was fine but he associates it more with a potato chip and a crisp texture.

My favorite was the Garlic Tomato Basil Hummus Popped Chips. I loved the flavor and the chip texture was light yet crunchy at the same time. My only issue was that since I received a snack size bag, it was gone in very little time. I didn't find the amount I received to be very filling even though it was exactly a serving size for that product. The Cinnamon Brown Sugar Multigrain Popped Chips had the same texture as the hummus chips which was pleasing. I'm not sure about the flavor combination for this one though as the multigrain chip did not work as well with a sweet coating in my opinion. I think I would have preferred the Italian Herb Multigrain Popped Chip.

Overall, I like the Smartfood Selects concept but I would stick to the savory popped chips. I think I will use my $1 off coupon on the Parmesan Herb Popcorn because that sounds like a flavor I will really enjoy.

OTL: Unreal Candy

Thanks to BzzAgent I had a chance to try out Unreal candy. Unreal candy is available in varieties similar to your favorite chocolate bars but with fewer calories, less sugar, and more protein. Essentially the claim is that because it has no artificial ingredients the candy will taste better while being better for you than regular candy. Notice that I didn't say the candy will be good for you. It is still candy after all.

BzzAgent and Unreal candy sent me a coupon for a free candy bar plus several buy one, get one free coupons. We used these some of these coupons to purchase Unreal 5 (similar to Milky Way), Unreal 8 (similar to Snickers), and Unreal 77 (Similar to Reese's). We did not try Unreal 41 or Unreal 54 (similar to M&Ms and Peanut M&Ms).

Out of the varieties that we tried the Unreal 8 was by far my favorite. I think it tastes the most similar to the candy it is supposed to mimic. Unreal 77 did not have enough of a peanut butter flavor to satisfy me and Unreal 5 just tasted a bit off somehow. All of the candy bars are less sweet than their traditional counterparts due to the reduction in sugar. The serving sizes for these candy bars are smaller as well which can account for the calorie reduction. Any time something has added protein I'm skeptical about the taste because I usually notice an aftertaste with these products. I had the same experience with this candy. There is that distinct protein taste that seems to be in protein shakes and bars.

While the taste of the Unreal candy didn't "Wow" me, I think it is something that I could get used to as an occasional candy treat. My husband liked the candy well enough and didn't notice the differences in taste that I did.

I do have to say that I HATE the packaging!! I think using numbers for the candy names is really annoying. The name itself doesn't give you any indication of what type of candy you will be getting. I find the super-shiny wrappers hard to read and it is only just now as I sit here writing this blog post that I finally noticed the brightly colored areas actually spell out Unreal in the logo. Considering how long I've been looking at these wrappers for various BzzAgent activities that tells you how difficult it is to read.

We purchased Unreal candy at CVS and have seen it at Kroger as well. The price was the same as other candy bars.

Our New Addition!

 On Thursday, February 16, our family grew by one. Victoria Jean entered the world at 6:45 pm weighing 7 pounds 3.6 ounces. Having Victoria was a completely different experience than having Elizabeth was over three years ago and I'm happy to say it was MUCH easier this time around!

Needless to say, I'm not getting a whole lot of reading done lately because taking care of a newborn and a three year old is a full time job in itself. I finished The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes before I went to the hospital and I haven't even picked up a book since I've been home. So things here on the blog may be slow for quite a while. I have some great books waiting to be read but I need to grab sleep whenever I can these days!

One thing that I hadn't completely forgotten about but that still shocked me a bit was the cost of diapers when we picked up our first package for Victoria. We used Pampers diapers with Elizabeth because that is what they had in the hospital and they worked so we just kept using them. We knew we would be bringing home some diapers from the hospital so we just picked up a small package of newborn diapers before I went to the hospital and it was around $10. I think that lasted us all of three days after getting home! I would love to have a cheaper alternative for diapers that work as well as the Pampers.

Thanks to BzzAgent.com and Comforts for Baby, I have the opportunity to try the Comforts for Baby brand diapers, wipes, and sippy cups. I was sent one package of baby wipes, a package with two sippy cups, a coupon for a free package of diapers, and several 20% off diapers coupons. Comforts for Baby products are available at the Kroger family of stores which is incredibly convenient for me as that is where we do our weekly grocery shopping anyway.

I picked up my free package of diapers on my last shopping trip but unfortunately we won't be able to use them for a while. The smallest size that I could find was a size 1 which starts at 8 pounds. Victoria is currently wearing the newborn size from Pampers which actually goes up to 10 pounds if we need it to. I pulled one of the Comforts diapers out of the package just to see how much bigger it is and it would definitely be too large on her right now. Plus the Pampers diapers have a small dip in the front to accommodate her cord which hasn't fallen off yet. Even if the Comforts diapers would fit at this point, I would still have to fold them down in front so it wouldn't cover and rub on her cord. The good news was that the package of Comforts diapers would cost me between $6 and $7 for about the same number of diapers as I got in the $10 Pampers package. So I'm looking forward to trying them when Victoria is a little bigger to see how they fit her and if they contain leaks. It would be nice if we like them because it would save us some money and a trip to another store since we've been buying diapers at Target or Sam's Club depending on the size we need.

The Comforts for Baby wipes say they are comparable to Huggies baby wipes and I would agree that this is an accurate comparison. I think we used one or two packages of Huggies baby wipes with Elizabeth but we didn't really care for them much. The Comforts wipes are thick which is nice for cleaning up a messy diaper but they are also a bit stiff and don't seem very soft. Baby bottoms are a very sensitive area so not being very soft is a huge negative for me. We actually like the up & up brand of baby wipes from Target. They aren't as thick as the Comfort wipes but they are softer and have a little texture to them which helps clean the skin with less rubbing. Although I didn't look at the price of the Comfort for Baby wipes when I was in Kroger, my guess is that the pricing would be comparable to the up & up brand.

The Comforts for Baby brand carried by the Kroger family of stores goes far beyond just diapers and wipes. They also carry:

• Disposable changing pads
• Training Pants
• Skincare products
• Formula & Bottle liners
• Bowls, Spoons, & Cups
• Bibs, Pacifiers, & Teething Rings

While we don't currently have a need for most of these products, it is nice to know that Kroger has options available to meet Victoria's needs as she grows. I'm very curious too see how the diapers work for us when she is ready for that next size.

OTL: Private Selection Frozen Foods

Kroger is our primary grocery store and we love the Private Selection ice cream so I was very pleased to be invited to try some other Private Selection products through BzzAgent.com.

I found the appetizer selection at our store to be fairly limited and there was nothing I thought my husband would like. He did see one that he thought he might be interested in but I told him I was pretty sure we'd already tried it and not liked it very well. Of course now I can't remember which one that was. I chose the Mediterranean-Inspired Hors D'Oeuvers Collection which contained 3 each of spinach pesto puff, mushroom phyllo triangle, and feta sundried tomato phyllo roll. This is supposed to be 3 servings with each serving being one of each type of appetizer. I ate the entire box for lunch and was still hungry. I really enjoyed the spinach pesto puff and the mushroom phyllo triangle while the feta sundried tomato phyllo roll was just okay. The information I received said appetizer prices range from $3 to $7 per box but I don't remember seeing any at my store for less than $6. I have managed to lose my receipt but I'm pretty sure the box I got was close to the $7 mark making it fairly expensive to me. I can't imagine buying several boxes of appetizers for a party could possibly be cheaper than making something on your own even if there would be plenty of other food for guests to eat. Another thing to note with the variety that I purchased is that even though all the appetizers bake at the same temperature, the spinach pesto puffs take nearly twice as long as the other two. If I had been thinking I would have put the spinach pesto puffs in first and then added the others halfway through the baking time but I did it totally backwards and cooked the other varieties first and then ate them while the spinach pesto puffs baked.

For my pizza, I chose the Barbeque Chicken as it looked like one of the few varieties that my husband might try with me. He is definitely not a fan of unusual pizza toppings! While the description on the box sounded very good, the pizza ended up being somewhat of a disappointment. First when I took it out of the box I wasn't sure it was going to be enough for the two of us even though it says it is three servings. It turned out that we were filled up but we did eat the entire thing in one sitting with nothing left over. We both liked the crispy, flat bread crust although I may have over baked it just a bit in trying to get the cheese to look more melted. There were very large pieces of onion on the pizza and the only good thing about this is that it made them easier to pick off since there were so many. The barbeque sauce had a strong flavor and my husband even said it had a bit too much of a kick for him and he likes spicy foods. I thought there was too much sauce as well. While there was bacon visible on the pizza, neither of us could taste it over the flavors of the barbeque sauce and onions. While $5 isn't a bad price for a frozen pizza, we can purchase multi-packs of pizzas at Sam's Club which come out cheaper per pizza, feed the entire family not just the parents, and give us some leftovers.

Now dessert is where Private Selection seems to have things right. We are big fans of the Private Selection ice creams, although there have been a few flavors we didn't care for as much as others. The offer from BzzAgent didn't include ice cream which was okay because it gave me a chance to try another Private Selection dessert. I found the desserts to have more of a selection than the appetizers or the pizza and had a hard time choosing just one that I wanted to try. The range of sizes is better here too from packages with one or two servings to packages of four servings. The range of prices reflects this also at $3 to $5 a package. When I saw the package of four Belgian Chocolate Lava Cakes I knew that was something everyone in the family would like. These are yummy, rich, and chocolaty and I am sure we will be purchasing them again! They only take 40 seconds in the microwave and come out with lots of delicious molten chocolate in the middle. They aren't kidding when they say to wait a minute or two before eating them though because that chocolate gets hot. Last night my husband and I started out sharing one cake but we had to make a second as sharing was just not doing it for us! I think one cake each is pretty perfect though. It is enough to give you lots of chocolate but not so much that you will be overly full or go into a chocolate coma. Just like warm chocolate chip cookies, these chocolate lava cakes are perfect with a glass of milk.

Overall I was not as impressed with the Private Selection Frozen Foods as we have been with some of the other Private Selection products like ice cream and lunch meat. I don't think I'll be purchasing the appetizers or pizza again in the future but I can see trying more of the desserts and other Private Selection products through out the store. I believe the Private Selection products are available at all of the Kroger family of stores, although selection may vary by location.

OTL: Burt's Bees Sensitive Skin Products

My skin isn't normally too sensitive to cleansing and moisturizing products but pregnancy hormones have thrown my entire body out of whack and I can definitely tell a difference in my skin. So I was excited at the opportunity to try out some of the Burt's Bees line of sensitive skin products.

I have used other Burt's Bees products in the past and really enjoy them. Some things that I really like about the company are:

• No animal testing
• Natural ingredients whenever possible and clearly labeled
• Environmental friendly packaging and manufacturing processes

I was sent a full size bottle of the Burt's Bees Sensitive Skin Facial Cleanser to try and I love it! I think it actually removes makeup better than the facial cleanser I have been using and it left my skin feeling super clean and soft. You don't need to use a large amount either so the 6 oz package will last a while. The cleanser is fragrance-free but it does have a scent to it. I found that it smelled strongly at first but the scent faded quickly. The cleanser has a very slippery texture which took a little getting used to but it rinsed off very cleanly. I wonder if the slippery feeling comes from the Yucca or Quillaja, both plant ingredients that assist in cleansing the skin. I love that all of the products in the sensitive skin line are 99% natural, hypo-allergenic, dermatologist tested, and allergy tested.

I also received a full size bottle of the Burt's Bees Sensitive Skin Daily Moisturizing Cream. While I don't like the moisturizer quite as well as I like the cleanser, it is a good product. The main thing that I don't like about it is actually the container. I find it difficult to get the right amount out. If I use a full pump worth, it is too much but it is difficult to only press the pump part way down. The moisturizer has the same scent as the cleanser but again it fades quickly. To me the moisturizer feels a bit sticky when it is first applied but it leaves my skin feeling soft once it has a minute to soak in. The moisturizer contains rice extract for moisturizing and aloe for soothing along with the cotton extract which is in all of the products in the sensitive skin line. I do wish that Burt's Bees offered a version of this with the addition of sunscreen. I like having moisturizer and sunscreen in the same product so I am not adding layers of products to my face each day.

Other products in the sensitive skin line from Burt's Bees that I did not get to try are Burt's Bees Sensitive Skin Night Cream and Burt's Bees Sensitive Skin Eye Cream.

Overall, I was very pleased with the products in the Burt's Bees Natural Skin Solutions for Sensitive Skin line. I have always found Burt's Bees to offer high quality products at reasonable prices. Have you ever used Burt's Bees products? I'd love to hear about your favorites!

OTL: About.Me

I was introduced to about.me through an invitation to a Bzz Agent Campaign. About.me is an easy way to keep all of your online information in one place. You can add links to your profiles on social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and others. Now you can direct people to one page that allows you to connect through all of your online avenues.

Check out my about.me page at about.me/LibraryGirl  I chose one of their preset backgrounds but it looks easy enough to add your own photos and customize your page.  My page didn't take very long to set up at all.  I didn't include my Facebook page on there because I don't have one for the blog, just a personal account.  I have links to Twitter, LinkedIn, and this blog as well as a way to email me.  Through about.me I received a customized email address which I am now using for blog business (LibraryGirl@about.me) and I can also receive a package of business cards with my about.me information for the cost of shipping.

It is really interesting to browse through the profiles on about.me and see how people have customized their pages!  There are some really creative people using the service from actors and business entrepreneurs to bloggers and musicians.

An about.me page would be easy to include in a media kit or business proposal so that contacts would have all of your information in one place and know which social media and online outlets you use the most frequently.

Overall about.me was very simple to set up and won't take much updating to keep current.

OTL: Educator.com

Thanks to BzzAgent, I've been able to use Educator.com free for a month.  Educator.com is a great online service that provides video courses in Math, Science, and Computer Science.  These courses are taught by college professors and include both lecture and working through example problems.

My husband and I have both looked at some of these video courses and been very impressed.  I've been taking the HTML course while he has looked at another of the computer science classes and one of the math classes.  It really feels like we are back in the classroom!  The courses include a video of the professor and a whiteboard area where the lecture notes and examples are visible.  I've been watching the presentations in this mode while my husband made the whiteboard full-screen which takes away the visual of the video so he is just listening to the lecture without seeing the professor.

With the HTML course I love that it also includes the history of the Internet and an overview of how the web works instead of being solely focused on the coding.  Having that background knowledge to build on can be a real advantage.

The site itself is very easy to navigate, with drop down menus for each subject.  Within each course, each lecture is broken down into many smaller segments which makes it very easy to find your place after you take a break.  There are sample lectures available so you can get a feel for the service before subscribing.

I would highly recommend Educator.com for high school and college students.  There are many Advanced Placement courses available and I think it would be helpful for students studying for the ACT, SAT, or GRE.  Educator.com covers Math, Chemistry, Biology, Physics, and Computer Science with the possibility of expanding into more areas in the future.

New Harvest Vegetarian EPA

Recently, I told you about BzzAgent, a word of mouth company, and mentioned that from time to time I might have a product review on the blog.  Yep, this is one of those times.

A couple of weeks ago I received my kit for the New Harvest Vegetarian EPA campaign.  The kit contained a sample bottle with a week's worth of the product, some product information, and a few coupons to hand out.  First, I'll give you a bit of the product information and then I'll give you my experience with the samples.

The Info:  First off, what is EPA?  EPA is actually one of the family of fatty acids commonly referred to as Omega-3's.  The other two are DHA and ALA.  All of the Omega-3's are important for our bodies but most of us don't get enough of them from food.  The usual supplement for Omega-3's is fish oil.  Fish oil supplements can have side effects for many people including a fishy taste and fishy burps.  Also, how are vegetarians supposed to get their EPA when the most recommended food source is fish and the supplement is fish oil?  New Harvest has developed an entirely vegetarian source of EPA using fermented yeast and enclosing it in a vegetarian softgel.

So what are the health benefits of EPA?  (The following statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration and the product is not intended to treat, cure, or prevent any disease.)  According to New Harvest, studies have shown that EPA is important for heart health, supports positive mood and emotional well-being, and may help maintain healthy cholesterol levels.

My Experience:  I have taken fish oil supplements in the past with none of the fishy side effects that some people experience.  I'm also not a vegetarian so I have no vested interest in whether my EPA comes from fish or yeast.  The seven day supply of New Harvest Vegetarian EPA was enough to determine that I had no side effects from the supplement but it was certainly not long enough to notice any health benefits.  I think I would have needed a minimum of a month's supply to notice anything significant.  New Harvest focuses solely on EPA while fish oil supplements provide both EPA and DHA.  The New Harvest capsule provides 600mg of EPA in one pill while my fish oil simply states that it is 1000mg without providing a breakdown.  So I can't compare the levels of just EPA between the two pills.  Both pills are large and similar in size.  I cannot remember how much the fish oil cost so I can't compare the price of the two products but the suggested retail for 30 New Harvest vegetarian gelcaps is $19.99.  For my needs, I think the fish oil is sufficient because I can purchase it pretty much anywhere instead of making a special trip to get the New Harvest product.

Have you heard about the BABIES movie that is coming to theaters Mother's Day weekend?  I hadn't either until BzzAgent provided me with some special content to share with all of you.  My daughter and I watched this movie trailer together and it looks super cute!  The movie follows four babies from different parts of the world during their first year.




How adorable are those babies?!  My daughter is getting close to 18 months old and she absolutely loved watching that preview.  People are just fascinated by babies and this movie looks like it will show the common element of humanity even as the babies learn and grow in such different environments.




Both USA Today and the TODAY Show are raving about the movie and anticipating it to be a big hit.  You can even get your baby in on the action by becoming a fan of BABIES on Facebook and then submitting a photo or video of your child for a chance to win prizes.

BzzAgent Product Reviews

Library Girl Reads is a book blog and it is going to stay that way.  However I do mention other companies and services once in a while (Swagbucks being the main one so far) so I wanted to give you the heads up about another company that I work with.  BzzAgent is a Word of Mouth marketing company that provides products and services to agents for free or a discounted price in order to spread the word and gather feedback about the products or services.  Agents are invited to campaigns based on many factors including demographics.  I have received campaigns for insect repellent, body wash, razors, and baby products.  I know there have been a variety of food and restaurant campaigns as well.

Why am I telling you about BzzAgent?  Mainly because I didn't want you to be surprised if I start doing a product review on the blog now and then.  Plus, I think it is a pretty fun way to try some new products and provide direct feedback to the companies who make them.
