A Furry Friend #BlogFlash2012 Day 2

Elizabeth is big right now on classifying things in to likes and dislikes. A typical list runs, "I don't like motorcycles. I like cars. I don't like loud things. I like quiet things. I don't like dogs. I like kittens." And there it is, "Can we have a kitten?" So far I've been able to put her off with the excuse that Victoria is too little for a kitten and the request has been quickly forgotten as she moves on to other things. I wonder though if I will cave in when the girls start asking together and I'll be in real trouble if they get their daddy on board.

I had pets as a kid. We had dogs, cats, guinea pigs, a rabbit, hermit crab, chameleons and fish. So after all of that I know that I don't like cleaning up after any kind of animal. I hate litter boxes and cleaning cages. I don't even want to think about picking dog poop up from the yard. Don't get me wrong. I enjoy animals - just not in my house. For now, the girls are going to have to be content visiting the kitty at grandma's house. We'll talk again when they are big enough to clean out the litter box!

  1. I think it is a great idea to wait until both are a bit older and can take turns cleaning out the litter, feeding, etc. A pet is such a great way to teach responsibility - not to mention unconditional love!!! Great post!

  2. Oh, yeah. I'm waiting until my kids are old enough to take care of an animal on their own. I think 13 and 20 will work, don't you think?

  3. Excellent idea to wait until the kids can do all the pet care. That way you just get the fun bits.

  4. That sounds like a sensible approach, Angela! The furry friends are so appealing until they start pooping!

  5. Great post Angela.

You do the right thing waiting till the girls can clean the litter boxes.

I thought of that when Donna wanted to get six cats. You know what happened? I ended up being the one to clean the litter boxes ;)

    She's worth it though :)

  6. I would be so lost without all my animals especially when I was growing up. Thankfully I grew up next to my grandparents so there was never a shortage of animals
